Day 9

Thursday, May 30, Day 9   ... also Ascension, a national holiday

Lyon is nice and quiet today, as it's the beginning of a 4-day weekend. With holidays on Thursday (and there can be a few in May) schools and many people take the Friday off as a pont (bridge) to the weekend. It means a lot of tourist traffic, which was Neil's problem with trains yesterday, because they had no reservations.

Because we were tired, we slept in till 9 but managed to have breakfast before the buffet closed at 10. We came back up to the room, where I had a nap for an hour! Then we went for a walk, to see stuff and find lunch. Yes, eating is a priority! We went through Place Carnot, a park that's quite near, and had our choice of sidewalk cafés. We picked the Restaurant des Îles, with specialties from the French Caribbean, La Réunion and Mauritius. Very tasty. and the people-watching was fine, too.
Here are 2 people on a Lime scooter. They're everywhere, and were a real menace in Paris.

Then we wandered back to the room to catch some wifi and rest. Neil has gone out to arrange our trains to the airport tomorrow --early! I have checked us in online with Air Canada, getting seats together!

We considered going on a riverboat dinner cruise, but decided against it. It was pricey and looked from the brochure that the tables were crowded together, indoors. In the end, we did some reading, writing, surfing, and resting and then went out in search of drinks and dinner.  First, we walked through Place Carnot. I deduced that this grand statue was dedicated for the centenary of the French Revolution.

We ended up at the beer terrace right next to our lunch restaurant.

The block behind Neil in these pictures was quite attractive, and even had a church in the middle, shoulder to shoulder with all the other buildings. There was a digital sign on the pharmacy on the corner, telling us the temperature was 34 degrees (C), but I think it must have been in the sunshine all afternoon. It dropped quickly as the afternoon shade took over, but the temperature was probably about 22, anyway. A very pleasant evening.
We had a few possibilities in mind for our evening meal. The first just didn't appeal to me, the second was closed, the third couldn't seat us till 9 (it was just after 7), so we went back to Brasserie Georges because we had enjoyed it so much the night before.

They were very busy, too, probably because of the holiday, and we had to wait a little while for a table. We found ourselves sitting quite close to the couple from Montreal we had sat next to the night before! Neil wanted to eat more duck, and so he did. I was looking for more regional specialties, so I had quenelles (actually not plural, just one giant puffy soufflé of fish in a delicious sauce). We had an appetizer of Lyonnais charcuterie to begin. Dessert was unnecessary!

Back around the block to finish packing and drop into bed!
